Flipboard creates a personalised magazine for the things you 
like to read and it offers an alternative to browsing the Web for 
news. It has become one of the essential iPad apps.

iBooks: Built in app

You can highlight or underline text, make notes, look up a word 
in the dictionary or on the web, or search inside the book. You 
can even use VoiceOver to have iPad read to you.Tap the Store 
button in iBooks and the bookshelf flips round to reveal the 
iBookstore. There you’ll find 700,000* books and counting — 
including new Multi-Touch textbooks.

iTunes U: FREE

The iTunes U app gives you access to complete courses from
 leading universities and other schools - plus the world's largest 
digital catalogue of free educational content. iTunes U features 
free courses in a wide array of subjects.

Evernote: FREE

Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create-to-do lists, 
record voice reminders and make these notes completely 
searchable.

Teacher's Pick HD: £1.49

Teacher's Pick HD gives you the ability to randomly and uniquely 
choose children without having to rely on memory, cups of craft 
sticks or flash cards. Just add your class names and the children 
in each class. Teacher's Pick keeps track of which children are 
active, inactive (already chosen) or absent.

Dropbox: FREE

Dropbox lets you bring all your photos, documents, and videos
 anywhere. Dropbox allows files to be easily shared between 
children and teachers. A collaborative Dropbox could be an 
effective tool for children to submit work and the teacher to 
share files.

ShowMe Interactive Whiteboard: FREE

Show me allows you to record voice over whiteboard tutorial and 
share them online. The app records your ShowMe as soon as you 
open the app to easily explain a range of topics.

Educreations Interactive Whiteboard: FREE

Educreations turns you iPad into a recordable whiteboard. With 
voice recording, realistic digital ink, photo imports and simple 
sharing through e-mail, now you can broadcast your ideas from  anywhere. Lessons could be put on the Web to be viewed by 
children, you could help someone from afar and add commentary 
to your lesson.

TED: FREE

Riveting talks from remarkable people, free to the world. TED's

Find My iPhone: FREE

Extremely useful app in schools! So long as this app is installed 
on your iOS devices and you know the Apple ID and password for 
your iPad then Find My iPhone will help you locate a missing 
device on a map. You can then chose to display a message or 
play a sound, remotely lock your device, or erase your data on it.

FaceTime: Built in app

FaceTime allows you to make video calls. This app has huge 
potential for collaborative learning. For example, children could 
use FaceTime to help with their learning, by contacting a teacher, 
who could be an expert in a particular area, or other children on 
a project they are working on for help. They do this by simple 
calling their email address.

Skype for iPad: FREE

Same idea as using FaceTime in school. Could be used as an 
alternative to FaceTime though. For example, in our school the 
proxy setting (at the moment) for the Internet won't allow the 
use of FaceTime across our wireless.

String Augmented Reality: FREE
This amazing app merges both the real-world environment and 
virtual one, in ways that allows you to interact with the device 
depending on the application. Augmented reality Showcase 
makes things come to life right out of a printed images (see 
my screen shot).

CloudOn: FREE

This app allows you to get Microsoft Office on your iPad. CloudOn 
lets you use your iPad to create, view and edit files directly in 
Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. To use CloudOn you must 
have Dropbox to manage your files.

Pages: £6.99

Pages is a word processing app that has been designed for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. You can create, edit, and view documents wherever you are. There are 16 design templates and styles to 
create letters, reports, flyers, cards and posters. You can share your 
work by exporting it as a Pages '09, Microsoft Word, or PDF file and sending it via Mail.

Keynotes: £6.99

Keynote is a presentation apps designed for mobile devices. You 
create presentation by simple touching and tapping. Highlight 
your data with 3D bar, line, area, and pie charts, animated with 
new 3D chart builds such as crane, Grow, Radical, and Rotate. 
If you own an iPhone you can buy the Keynote Remote app (£0.69), 
which you can use to control your presentation through your wireless 
network.
